I’ve been working some on improving the SBL formats for the Bookends bibliographic database (since I’m using it for my doctoral exam bibliographies and dissertation research). The “book chapter” format was completely screwed up; I’ve fixed that and will now be de-bugging some of the others soon. It’s nice to be able to import the information, categorize it, and then simply pull it into my bibliographies or writing projects without having to do surgery on the citations.

On another note, the upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard was by far the most painless OS upgrade I’ve ever made. The system is a bit snappier, too.

  • Just noticed this post. Have you put up your Bookends SBL format on the internet anywhere? I’m interested.

  • I have also noticed that the “book chapter” format is taking the chapter’s name title for the book title as well, but I do not know how to solve the problem. Could you share the style in a download? Thanks.

  • Hello Jason,

I was searching for a Bookends SBL format and Google led me here! Are you still planning to share your style with the world?

    • I am indeed, but I still have some work to do to get things right; I’ve got a few spots where it’s not formatted correctly. I can send what I’ve got to you now if you’d like, however.

      • Thank you, that would be nice. I did spend some time trying to do this myself at one time but also had some problems which I always ended up fixing by hand in the final manuscripts.

I’m a new Bookends user, and I’m looking for an SBL format. Any chance you’d email yours to me, or post it on the web for download?

I’m also looking for an SBL format for Bookends. I found one on the internet that doesn’t quite get the job done (probably the same one you refer to – the “Book chapter” format was pretty scrambled). I would be very thankful if you could send me what you have!

  • I guess you will have lots of fans when you publish it. I was looking for a SBL Format for Bookends and Google brought me here as well. I’d love to see what you have!

Hi Jason. I am apparently part of the hoard clambering for your SBL format. I’m just starting my PhD program and would love to have this all squared away in Bookends. Thanks!

  • Hey Jason,
Have you permanently fixed this problem in Bookends? I am brand new to BE and is having the same problem three years later. Any permanent solution? thanks Kevin

Hi Jason, Why the move the Sente? Are you happy with that program?

    Reply
    • One reason was the way it handled in-app search and resource additions, attachments, iPad integration, and sharing libraries. I’ve generally been pleased with Sente, but the app seems to have been abandoned of late and I do think Bookends’ support is leaps and bounds better even when Sente seems to be getting developed, which has made me consider moving back at some point.

But I just don’t have the energy or time to think about that at this point, so I’ll stick with what I’m doing at least until I’m done with my dissertation.
