I am privileged to be part of a panel discussion with a group of eminent UNC professors to accompany the world premiere of the National Geographic Channel six-part series, “The Story of God with Morgan Freeman,” (who is not God himself but has played God in the movies) taking place at UNC-Chapel Hill tomorrow evening. The announcement (and trailer) are below:Ng.story Of God

A world premiere and panel discussion of the National Geographic Channel six-part series, “The Story of God with Morgan Freeman,” will be held at the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education on March 23.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the screening starts at 7:30 p.m. for the campus event.

The series will air on the National Geographic Channel beginning April 3.

“The Story of God will take viewers on a trip around the world to explore different cultures and religions on the ultimate quest to uncover the meaning of life, God and all the questions in between.”

The on-campus screening will also feature a panel discussion with James Younger, producer of the series, as well as UNC faculty members/Ph.D. students:

  • Jodi Magness (Early Judaism),
  • Jason Staples (Early Christianity),
  • Brendan Thornton (Religion in the Americas),
  • Carl Ernst (Islam),
  • Lauren Leve (Buddhism and Hinduism).

The event is hosted by the UNC department of religious studies and the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies in partnership with “Different Drummer.”

    Hello Jason
Congratulations on your expertise in this very important subject. I am just starting to learn, discover, and study, and am starting to feel that an analytical, logical, and objective study of the subject is the only way to blow away all the mist. So much emotionalism, tradition, corruption, and just plain error have mixed their way in. There is also some argument about accuracy, bias, and mistranslation of the Bible itself. I suppose the only way to be sure is to learn the original languages, so that you can read the books in Greek, and Aramaic, Hebrew, or whatever else they were written in. But who has time to learn all of these languages? I am curious about one thing though. Are you a religious man, or is this an academic study for you?
